The Knight Digital Media Center, which is associated with the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, will offer three free workshops this spring – one for independent journalists, and two for multimedia journalists.
These are fellowships and you must be accepted to attend. Capacity is limited, but it’s certainly worth applying. All sessions are on the University of California Berkeley campus, but the Knight Digital Media Center pays for lodging, meals and the use of equipment. Accepted fellows are responsible for travel expenses.
Click here to apply. You have to register first, but you don’t have to complete the online application all at once; you may return multiple times to complete it.
The deadlines are as follows:
- Mar 21-26, 2010: Independent Journalists Workshop (Deadline: Feb. 17)
- May 16-21, 2010: Multimedia Training (Deadline: March 26)
- Jun 13-18, 2010: Multimedia Training (Deadline: March 26)
You will need a professional reference, so you should be thinking about that very soon if you’re applying to the Independent Journalists workshop. If you’re up against the wall, it’s important to note that applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. PST on the designated date.
Multimedia Reporting and Convergence Workshops
These are intense, multimedia training courses for mid-career journalists. Topics range from storyboarding to incorporating multimedia into storytelling. Those who attend will learn audio-video recording and editing, flash graphics, digital photography, Photoshop and Web concepts. Guest speakers will explore the future of journalism, the role of technology, and the importance of audience engagement.
If you’re thinking, “I can’t afford to travel to Berkeley,” or “I can’t get my application in on time,” there’s a fix for that.
The Knight Digital Media Center and UC Berkeley have an amazing website. The Center makes video recordings of major speakers and some of the lab work that goes on in these workshops. (It’s even possible that there will be live webcasts on the website of portions of the multimedia workshops.)
You can watch the recorded sessions free online in the Knight Center archives after the workshop is completed. True, it’s not as good as being there (or having that fellowship on your résumé), but it’s a great chance to learn. The website is full of other learning opportunities and archives of other workshops for you to watch, as well. So, enjoy.
Training at UC Berkeley

Jeremy Rue, a trainer with the Knight Digital Media Center, guides Lydia Chavez, a professor at the UC Berkeley Graduate School, as she integrates Flash animation features into her story project.
