Yes, of course the offer is extended to Displaced Journos, wherever they are.

And, as of 10 minutes ago, we have epub dates:

SKIING THE EDGE: Humor, Humiliation, Holiness and Heart will be available on or about:

December 1, 2011 Amazon/Kindle and The iBookstore -
December 10 Barnes and Noble
December 29 Sony

But you need not have a Kindle, iPad, Nook or Sony Reader to enjoy it. Once you download a free epub reader, your computer becomes your library. Just Google 'epub reader' to find the one that’s best for you.

It gives me hope for humanity to see support of uninfluenced investigative journalists. You are an endangered species.

I would like to talk with an investigative reporter about a timely issue. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Sadly, I must admit I was on the other side of this story as a managing editor for a magazine that didn't pay its writers. As an employee, I couldn't advise them against the interests of my employer, but I never did understand why they didn't haul her into small claims court after the third month. One writer actually took her to court and was cut a check the day they were to appear. In the end, she was two or three YEARS behind in paying some of the writers, who generously kept writing. The editor in chief and I found ourselves increasingly writing the magazine, which is the flip side to that problem. I didn't know you could petition to dissolve someone else's company. Good to know, though I haven't really had much trouble getting paid.

Thanks Afi. I wish more displaced journalists would weigh in on it -- so we can begin to discuss some kind of grand plan.

Re: poor copy editing, I recently sent this note to the NYTimes. Just today, the main story caption has breakdown as two words. I've included their response to my e-mail.

To: Joseph Burgess
Subject: Copy Editing

Has the Times killed off all its copy editors? I almost never used to see spelling and usage errors in the paper. Now, just today, I see that someone has forgotten to remove html coding:

title="ROBERT B. SEMPLE">This has not stopped House Republicans like Joe Barton, who says his Better Use of Light Bulbs Act (BULB) is an antidote to “Washington mandated” infringement on consumer choice.

On June 17, I saw this:

The defiance could bring difficult choices for the Western-backed Saudi authorities who have far have escaped major unrest from the Middle Eastturmoil. Officials could either launch a crackdown on the women and facing international pressure or giving way to the demands and angering traditional-minded clerics and other groups opposing reforms.

I got this response:

Ms. Krajnak, thanks for writing and pointing this out to us. Unfortunately sometimes these small copy mistakes like the ones you pointed out do make it online or in print, and we appreciate your help in pointing them out to us so we can alert The Times. If you see any of these in the future, please feel free to let us know, or you can contact The Times directly at nytnews@nytimes.com.

Thank you, Rosemarie. I'm happy that you've joined Displaced Journalists. Did you join by registering on this website or hitting "Like" on the Facebook fan page? If you registered on the site, please paste your resume and any contact info you want me to see in the box. I occasionally get specific requests for employers and HR people. I'm working on a new site with a more positive name and mission -- and that will involve building your own portfolio pages and selling your content at fair prices. NO content mills for us. I'm seeking funding now.

If you want to share your views about the future and how it looks for young journalists, I know the community would love to read what you have to say. It goes against everything I stand for to ask anyone to write for nothing, but I do this site with no funding, just out of love for the profession and for all of you colleagues out there, so I can't afford to pay anything, but a fair number of Displaced Journalists do share their thoughts, views, advice, commentary, etc. I would love to hear from you, but please don't feel pressured. We have the Facebook fan page with 1,335 members, a LinkedIn group and a Twitter Feed (DPJournalists). I hope you enjoy what you see. The more participation the better. I'll keep in touch regarding the new venture.

Oh, and, believe it or not, Jules Older, who commented on your comment, is not even a relative. We feel like cousins, but we're not. I saw his name on Media Bistro a few years ago and contacted him, sure that we had to be related, but it turns out it's only in spirit. It's not a common name and he lives in San Francisco, where much of my family lives. Amazing. He's a great guy. You'll see his column, Writer's Lifeguard, here on Displaced Journalists at random times.

Take care,

Susan
